MSc Cyber Security (Part-Time)
Why did you choose Northumbria University London for your studies?
Northumbria University have a relationship with the respected and trusted vocational training provider QA. The location of the London Campus is ideal for commuters from the South East, just a short walk from London Bridge Station and just a few minutes from Liverpool Street Station.
What was your main reason for wanting to undertake a part-time Masters in Cyber Security?
Personal challenge. I felt I had unfinished business from my youth and the Masters programme seemed an ideal way to prove to myself that I could take on a long term academic challenge. Not having Bachelor’s degree, the entry from vocational qualifications and experience also suited me.
How has your programme benefited your career?
Since I started the course I have been promoted. The differences between pure academic and pure industry approaches to the subject mean I can take away a novel set of skills that I hope to apply daily in my job.
Most useful aspect of your programme?
The London campus is conveniently positioned. Access to the university library has been both inspiring and educational far beyond just the required reading. Lecturers have proved to be both highly informed on the subject matters and accessible out side of core tutoring hours.
Tutoring over the weekends minimises disruption to work.
How have you utilised the learnings from the programme in your daily job?
Moving risk management into every aspect of my work has proved productive and helps gain trust and buy-in from management. I hope to review all aspects of what I have learnt and keep this structured approach alive throughout my Cyber Security career.
What advice would you give someone looking to study a Masters with us?
Any course of this level is going to be a significant, possibly life changing, challenge. I would advise any potential student to be sure they have the full support for of their family and friends. Whether your company is funding your studies or not getting significant backing from your employer is essential. Be prepared, the final project is worth a lot of credit and requires significant time investment. Above all, any university course is a wonderful opportunity – apply yourself and enjoy the experience.
Anything else?
I have been impressed with my experience with Northumbria University and with my tutors. The skills I have learnt will help enhance my career both from a raw Cyber Security perspective and the softer, general skills required in any graduate level role.
”I’m excited about the future. This degree has given me the foundation to significantly expand my career options with my current employment.”
