It’s official, Northumbria University has been awarded University of the Year 2022 at the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.
Known as the ‘Oscars of higher education’ this award celebrates Northumbria University’s mission to become the UK’s first research-intensive modern university, which began back in 2008.
The goal was ambitious: put research at the heart of everything in an innovative environment that champions student diversity and social mobility as well as supporting the regional economy.
The university’s journey has been marked by special achievements over the years including those from the Research Excellence Framework (REF) – a measure of quality and strength of research in UK universities. In 2021 Northumbria University had the biggest rise in research power of any UK university, moving up 27 spaces to 23rd after having moved up to 50th in 2014 from 80th in 2008.
Professor Andy Long, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of Northumbria University explains that the THE award showcases that “…the education we give our students is enriched by research.
I genuinely believe what sets us apart from others is that 40% of these students are from traditionally low-participation backgrounds. Along with all our students, they learn from researchers and academics, participate in research and co-create knowledge.
…Northumbria has undergone an extraordinary transition. The dedication of everyone at the University has made this possible, and it is thanks to them that we can now celebrate this phenomenal success.”
Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Chancellor of Northumbria University adds: “When I was invited to become Chancellor at Northumbria there were two things that stood out. The first was the people, who are extraordinary, and the second was the level of ambition. It wasn’t about being a bit better, it was about being the absolute best they could be. Winning the THE University of the Year award recognises these qualities for all to see.”
“When I wanted to come to the UK, I searched for five to six universities and Northumbria University was the best I found because of the reputation, it’s recognised worldwide. When I was searching for this University the staff helped me a lot. I met delegates from the University, they were so helpful. The consulting team came and they told me everything about the University and it was amazing.”
