The scarves and gloves are definitely out as autumn is finally here! Although summer in London has its good points, the city really comes to life as the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop. There are several autumn and winter traditions celebrated throughout the UK, some more universal and others unique.
In this post, however, we will concentrate on 4 of the best events London has to offer in the next 2 months, from Fireworks to the festive season.
November
Alexandra Palace Fireworks Festival
2 November, Alexandra Palace
Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder, treason and plot… This fireworks display may actually be on the second of November, but it is held to commemorate a plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators were stopped and executed, so every year we remember. A little strange, yes – but the fireworks displays are a brilliant tradition and one of the best in London is at Alexandra Palace in North London. You can also try your hand at ice skating, and watching the bonfire and enjoying the rides at the funfair.
Enchanted Woodland
9 November, Syon Park
A magical event that happens every year, the Enchanted Woodland sees these historic, 600-year-old gardens lit up with beautiful coloured displays. The Great Conservatory in the centre of the arboretum (a garden made up of trees) is the centrepiece and will be completely illuminated. Visitors can walk along the glittering trail which features several different installations and interactive light displays. It’s a picture-perfect evening out – just remember to buy tickets in advance, as this event sells out every year.
December
Winter Wonderland
23 November – 6 January, Hyde Park
Winter Wonderland is an annual event that marks the start of Christmas in London. As soon as those gates open and the lights are lit, everything starts to feel a little more magical. There are so many things to do, including ice-skating, rides, and several different food and drink stands serving seasonal treats like mulled wine and toasted nuts and marshmallows. If you want to attend a show, they have everything from a circus complete with big top tent to a comedy club featuring some of the UK’s best stand ups.
Winter Market
9 November – 27 December, Southbank
Part of Wintertime on the Southbank, this Christmas market is a brilliant festive event that happens every year. The perfect opportunity to buy gifts for friends and family, try food from around the world, and enjoy the festive music and twinkling lights, this market is held on the banks of the Thames so we suggest you wrap up very warm to enjoy an evening of Christmas fun.
