Maryam is a Study Skills Lecturer on the ACE Team at Northumbria London campus, with over six years of experience as an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Lecturer in the Middle East. During her career, she has managed teams of EAP lecturers, evaluated curricula, and designed assessments. She has also been involved in developing English language programmes catering to learners at various levels, from beginner to advanced. Maryam holds an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Birmingham, in addition to a CELTA. Outside of teaching, she is an avid traveller with a keen interest in learning about different cultures and history, which further enriches her perspective as an educator.
Maryam’s research interests lie within applied linguistics, with a particular focus on discourse analysis, bilingualism, language testing, and curriculum development. She is especially intrigued by the relationship between language, power, and society. Her future research aspirations include investigating language perception in the UK and exploring how it shapes individuals’ interactions in various contexts. Her academic work is driven by a desire to understand how language constructs and reflects societal norms, particularly in educational settings.
Maryam specialises in academic writing and research skills, equipping students with the tools they need for success in higher education. Her teaching methods are student-centred, incorporating communicative and task-based language teaching techniques. She integrates technology and gamification to enhance learning outcomes and support student learning, ensuring that her students are equipped with both the practical and academic skills needed to excel in their studies.
